filzfun: Issue 70 spring 2021

The romantic ensemble consisting of a dress, vest and top hat in off-white with a veil and rose décor by Erika Graf on the cover of this filzfun issue should make you happily attuned to the coming spring. Along with the Swiss felt artist we introduce you to Molly Williams from England and her expressive dance sculptures as well as to Sabine Köhlert with her minimalistic, reduced to the essence art objects.
Gladys Paulus brings endangered animal species into focus with her Social-Media-project “Faces of Extinction“ and summons us to act accordingly. A modern fairy tale creature, the Gruffalo from the picture books by Axel Scheffler and Julia Donaldson Katrin Orrell has come to life in the shape of an impressive costume made from sheep wool and discarded clothes. You will see some pictures from the work in progress and the formidable result.
Meike Raßbach reports on two important felt courses: Charlotte Sehmisch showed at Filzrausch in Göttingen how cubes and other geometrical objects can be felted in a single piece, and under the instruction of Heidi Greb tailor-made vests were made at Doreen Lüpfert’s studio . Virtually and with 260 participants around the globe the first online feltmakers‘ meeting took place, for which Corinna Nitschmann was able to win some of the most renowned lecturers from Hungary. In this issue we show some of these astounding objects that have been created in that online course.

optics play the main role in Ina Jeromin‘ss animated short film „Kleider machen Schafe" (Clothes Make the Sheep). She was awarded with one of the three creative awards at the short film festival Kurzfilmtag 2020. She told the filzfun about the filming for which she lay on the lawn for hours, trimming the leaves of grass to the right length with nail scissors.
To care for oneself is not only important in times of a worldwide pandemic. Meditation can be of great help to find inner peace. We think that a firm cushion filled with spelt in a hand-felted cover provides just the right grounding. Carola Zeiger explains in a step-by-step instruction and with many photos how you can felt your own meditation cushion cover.
