filzfun: Issue 71 summer 2021
Published on May 28

Lively mice that frolic in a sea of wool, play Scrabble, dance around the maypole or simply felt: The Woolly Felters www.woollyfelters.com Roz Dace and Judy Balchin delight an ever-growing enthusiastic fan scene with cute photo stories of their felt mice, but also with felted caricatures of VIPs and impressive felt images on Instagram and Facebook every day. We are pleased to portray the feltmaking sisters, the Hungarian-American Flóra Carlile-Kovács www.florafelts.com and the German felt artist Ina Birke www.filzgewandt.de who both fathom the limitless possibilities of felt design in their individual and distinctive way.
Matters of technique are emphasized in this filzfun issue: The dyeing expert Anke Jacobi-Culemann www.wollenaturfarben.de describes in many examples how fibers and felt can be dyed with natural plants and the power of the sun. Each year she experiments with solar dyeing and she keeps discovering new combinations and tricks of the trade. Needle-felting fans may rejoice in a detailed Woolly Felters www.woollyfelters.com instruction to make a cuddly teddy with moveable limbs. Dina Elmani-Zanka www.filzreich.at explains how funny crayon monsters can be made out of waste fleece or curls, for instance as a small surprise for schoolkids to cover ballpoint pens.
All feltmakers sorely miss the community in classes and at meetings due to the Corona pandemic restrictions.

More and more, lecturers and artists develop virtual formats and offer classes and workshops online. There creative people from all over the world can meet and exchange their views and work. In this issue we report on digital courses by Dagmar Binder www.textillabor.de and Susanne Schächter-Heil www.wollwerkerin.de.
Also the team of the German Filz-Netzwerk www.filznetzwerk.de thought about meeting over distance and called for a global felting challenge: The task is to copy surfaces in one’s own home surroundings as lifelike as possible and in their original size. Some of the astounding results are depicted in this issue.
