filzfun: Issue 72 autumn 2021
Published on August 30

The fall issue of the filzfun provides portraits of exceptional felt artists and inviting instructions for experimentally inclined feltmakers. We present Natalia Ostrovskaya and her breathtaking felt fashion on brilliant photos. Exclusively for the filzfun readers the Russian artist tells us the secrets of her viscose strip technique for a gossamer-like scarf in a thorough, well-illustrated workshop.
Brigitte Funk has also developed a special felting method: A double resist technique by means of which you can make sculptural snail shells remindful of the Great African Snail. The artist explains her skilful technique in detailed step-by-step instructions. In the portrait she tells us how she became a textile artist and her projects, such as her witty ‚beetle manufacture‘.
In further portraits please meet Joke van Zinderen and her expertise in Origami felting as well as Trudi Janker, one of the eldest and still most active feltemakers in Germany.
In times of Corona limitations the German Filz-Netzwerk encouraged contact by offering felt challenges. »Filz und Draußen« (Felting Outdoors) was the title of the second challenge. We present some of the results.
Exhibits and other events had to be postponed due to the pandemic or were cancelled altogether. The 16th Textile Art Berlin Textile Art Berlin, called off already in 2020 was entrusted to the Internet and met with a lot
of enthusiasm. We report on the digital textile art fair and two shows by felt and textile artists who occupy themselves with existential questions: Yvonne Zoberbier showed needle-felted sculptures titled „Menschenbilder” (Images of Human Beings), and Sawatou Mouratidou called her work show »Anthropos – Mensch sein« (Being Human).
In our serial „Sheep & Wool“ Silvia Rieder describes a very rare breed of sheep which has been deemed already extinct: the Zaupel sheep. Two small flocks are kept in the Swabian Farm House Museum Illerbeuren
